Faerie Mermaid Galene and Salty Stuart the Pirate present Galene's Storywings, a series of storytime performance programs for libraries and other venues. Its purpose is to educate and entertain families about nature and to encourage reading. At each program, Galene and Salty Stu read a book, perform the original music of Neptune's Keep, and provide a Show & Tell nature talk about a theme animal or habitat. Galene's costume (mermaid or faerie), music selections, and the book, all reflect that theme.

Some Storywings programs feature original books written by Faerie Mermaid Galene and published by our own publishing house, Galene Press.

Mermaid Galene's Storywings launched in 2015 at the Hudson, WI Public Library. We now offer Storywings to libraries throughout west central Wisconsin and to other select venues.

For more information, visit our Storywings website.

She's a natural, you can spot it -
spreads a smile across my face.
From a mile away, she's got it,
nailing notes with perfect grace.

She's the One Fish, she's the Two Fish.
She's the Fish Who Plays the Blues Fish,
and she's got it all together.
She's the Fish Who Made the News.

And she thinks: "If only fish could fly,
dreams all bright and air alight,"
and chimes a note to say goodbye.
She's headed out the door.
She's not earthbound anymore!

Jor Jor

What does it take to take to be a hero? What it does it take to shatter a seemingly impassable barrier and open a thousand ears and hearts? What does it take to change the world's mind?

Maybe it just takes one remarkable fish and her entrancing music.

The Fish Who Changed The World tells the absolutely true story of Jor Jor and her transformation from seemingly ordinary goldfish to musical artist and worldwide celebrity. It's a story that transcends the previously untested boundaries between two species, united by a common gift that binds us together in awestruck harmony. It's a story of discovery and expanding horizons. Above all, it's a love poem.

The Mermaid Pirate Band

Oh, I’d  love to be in a mermaid band —
one with pirates, too.
‘Cuz if I had a shiny tail,
I wouldn’t need my shoes.

We’d swim along with a jolly song,
while the ship goes on a cruise.
Away we’d go with a Yo ho ho and
Oh, oh, oh!
(siren call)

Yo ho, yo ho!
The seashell trumpets blow.
Yo ho, yo ho!
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh!

Now I’m in The Mermaid Pirate Band.
I travel far from shore.
I sing with whales
and shine my scales.
Who could ask for more?

The fish keep time, and the oysters chime
like bells on the ocean floor.
Away I go with a Yo ho ho and
Oh, oh, oh!

Yo ho, yo ho!
The seashell trumpets blow.
Yo ho, yo ho!
Oh oh, oh oh, oh oh!

Yo ho, yo ho!
Our music is quite grand.
Yo ho, yo ho!
We’re The Mermaid Pirate Band.

Mermaid Galene and Salty Stuart believe that music is a treasure more precious than a pirate's chest full of diamonds and pearls (though we like those, too.) Musicmaking is a journey that, once embarked upon, can provide a lifetime of creative energy, accomplishment, and joy. Part of our mission as entertainers and educators is to fuel that musical journey in children and steer it in a positive and satisfying direction.

The Mermaid Pirate Band is a unique and fun way to encourage every child's musical development. We teach kids easy songs written by Neptune's Keep specifically for this program, give them simple musical instruments to play, then direct them in an on the spot performance.

Mermaid Galene and Salty Stuart are more than just artists/ entertainers. We are naturalist-conservationists with a solid footing (or finning) in the sciences. We love to entertain, but we are also commited to educating our audiences about animal behavior, the ecology of aquatic habitats, and the human-induced perils these habitats face. We offer structured educational programs, but we also view every public encounter as a teachable moment. We engage audiences with information about the ecology and animals of specific aquatic and land habitats. Our music, both human and fish-generated, also inspires audiences to investigate nature's mysteries. Learning from a mermaid and pirate is memorable and fun for children and adults!

For older children and adults in indoor venues, our structured program, Fish Have Hidden Depths, delves into the science and art of fish music. We touch upon such topics as fish anatomy and physiology, the physics of sound in air and water, and the neurobiology of fish and humans. Through video and audio, audiences see and hear the cognitive and creative abilities of fish. Trust us, the discovery that fish are truly musical makes a lasting impression on budding scientists, artists, and music appreciators of all ages!
